Just a few days ago we learned the news that the new film starring Johnny Depp will be presented in the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival and yesterday the first official trailer was finally revealed.
The images show us Depp characterized as King Louis XV of France himself, in full splendor of Versailles, with his co-star, the french actress and also director of the film Maïwenn, who also plays Jeanne du Barry, a courtesan who conquers the heart of the monarch until she ends up being a countess.
At this point, there are a few moviegoers left that haven’t seen the Jeanne du Barry trailer. In case you haven’t watched it already, you can find it at the end of this article. But what is certain is that few people will have noticed some “Easter eggs” or hidden details that the trailer has revealed to us. Do you want to know them? Keep reading and we’ll tell you.
1. Jean-Baptiste du Barry, the pimp who brought Jeanne to the king
Monsieur du Barry met Jeanne (who was then presented as Jeanne Vaubernier) at the casino where she worked. Fascinated by her beauty, he proposed to introduce her to the high sphere of Parisian society at the time. He nicknamed her to society as Mademoiselle Lange (word that could be translated as “the angel”). From that moment on, Jeanne’s fame soared among the court of Versailles.
2. How did Jeanne became a countess?
Given the effect of Jeanne in Versailles, Monsieur du Barry saw in her the perfect opportunity to have influence among the high spheres. But in order to access the unofficial title of maîtresse-en-titre (official lover), Jeanne needed to have a title of nobility. This wasn’t a problem for her pimp. He quickly fixed it so that she could marry his brother, Guillaume du Barry and falsified the necessary documentation to simulate a false lineage and grant her the title of countess.

3. The introduction to the king: a whole prepared staging
The moment in which Jeanne is presented to the king Louis XV is anything but random. Both her clothing and the place were carefully prepared for the occasion. Jeanne had been installed for some time in the rooms above those of the king, but there hadn’t been a formal introduction between them yet. The night before the meeting, the king sent her a set of jewels and a gold-embroidered dress, which Jeanne didn’t hesitate to show off the next day in front of him and the entire court in the famous Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles.
4. Zamor, the Bantu slave that the king gave to Jeanne du Barry
Have you noticed the boy who accompanies Jeanne in some scenes? The young man, probably of Bengali origin, was given to Jeanne to be her servant, whom she dressed elegantly to show off to everyone. The fun fact is that, years later, the young man became a revolutionary against the monarchy, being an important participant in the famous French Revolution.
5. Two great rivals: the bad relationship between Marie Antoinette and Jeanne du Barry
Did you know that Jeanne du Barry met the famous Marie Antoinette in Versailles? The 14 year old Marie Antoinette was going to be married to Louis XVI (son of then monarch Louis XV, played by Johnny Depp) and couldn’t stand Jeanne’s scandalous and extravagant behaviour.
Such was their rivalry, that it came to endanger the Franco-Austrian alliance. Then the Count of Mercy (Austrian ambassador in France) organized a dinner as a meeting between them to try to soften their relationship in front of the court. One of Louis XV’s daughters, on Marie Antoinette’s side, pushed Jeanne du Barry away before Marie Antoinette came to greet her, which made Jeanne feel even more humiliated. Some time later, Marie Antoinette finally spoke to Jeanne du Barry, although only to tell her that “there are too many people in Versailles today”.
Jeanne du Barry, produced by IN2 Film and distributed by Le Pacte in France and by Notorious Pictures in other European countries, was shooted during May 2022 in multiple French locations such as Versailles. Shooting photos were already showing a movie plot full of intensity and beauty of the most flourishing ages for the French monarchy.
The film project cast is expected to attend this year’s Cannes Festival edition next month, where it will be premiered in its official section. There are already rumors about other film festivals hosting it during the second half of this year.
