The appearance of Edward Scissorhands is born from a drawing that Tim Burton himself did when he was in high school and that he baptized it that way because of his appearance.
It was going to be a musical. In fact, there was a song written (I Can’t Handle It). It seems crazy, but it’s not so much if one thinks that Burton directed years later “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory” (2005) or “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (2007).
The neighborhood from the movie really exists. Precisely it’s a new neighborhood (at that time) from Tampa, in Florida, United States.
The houses were painted expressly for the movie. “We went door to door and got everyone to agree to allow us to cut all their bushes and paint their houses”, said the production designer Bo Welch in an interview.
The enormous animal shaped bushes are fake. The producers of the film couldn’t find any gardener with Edward’s skills to decorate the hedges. “They’re steel frames wrapped with wire mesh and covered with artificial grass”, said Welch.
The castle doesn’t exist, it’s a model. When Peg sees it through the car’s rearview mirror, she doesn’t see an enormous building, instead, she sees a small design from the art department.
Johnny Depp wasn’t thought of first to interpret Edward. Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hanks, Gary Oldman or Jim Carrey were shuffled as options to interpret the role.
Tom Cruise was also thought of but he failed in the interview with Tim Burton. He asked Tim to change the end of the story, something Burton didn’t accept.
However, they didn’t have any doubts with Winona, she was always the first option.
Johnny Depp only says 150 words in the entire film. In fact, the character wasn’t going to speak and was going to limit himself to express himself only with the eyes.
Johnny was so ready to interpret his role in a masterful way that he came to lose 11 kg. And his enthusiasm brought him to tears, “I cried like a baby when I read the script for the first time”, Depp has confessed in more than one occasion.
Because of the tight suit that he had to wear and the layers of makeup, Johnny Depp passed out in several occasions during the filming and he suffered from continuous dizziness and vomiting that he had to deal with in order to give life to his character.
Edward’s scissors are all diferente from each other. They’re all different designs of clippers.
A cameo before its release. And Oogie Boogie does it, the character from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993). He appears at the bottom of the stairs of Edward Scissorhands’s castle. They’re quite similar.
The iconic hands of the protagonist were designed by the makeup and special effects technician Stan Winston, known for his work in the movies of “Terminator” and “Jurassic Park” among others.
The bed scene wasn’t on the script. In fact, it was the only shot of the film that Tim Burton improvised on the progress.
The movie raised 108 millions at the box office. However, not all the reviews were good and they only got a nomination for the Oscars. But with time it has become a classic and one of the most iconic films of Burton.
